A fourfold increase in the MIC of gentamicin was also noted for the lpd mutant (Table 3). No major differences were observed between the wild type and the SCV in terms of susceptibility to β-lactam antibiotics, chloramphenicol, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and the quinonoles nalidixic acid and ofloxacin (Table 3). These results suggest that S. enterica SCV isolates are less sensitive to aminoglycosides, an expected finding considering that their mutations may potentially lead to defects in respiratory metabolism. Complementation of the hemL, lpd, and aroD mutants with the corresponding wild-type genes increased antibiotic susceptibility (Table 3), confirming that there is a direct relationship between the point mutations responsible for the SCV phenotype and the observed changes in sensitivity to aminoglycoside antibiotics."
