Comments | Abstract:"Olfactory sensory neurons have a half-life of about 90 days and are continually renewing." p.609 right column top paragraph:"In the adult mouse, olfactory sensory neurons turn over asynchronously with a half-life of about 90 days (primary sources). Regenerating neurons derive from dividing olfactory stem cells, the globose basal cells, that reside at the base of the sensory epithelium (Caggiano et al. 1994). The topographic map of sensory projections in the olfactory bulb remains constant with age despite the continual generation of sensory neurons, implying that information necessary for maintenance of the map persists throughout the life of the organism." |
