Value 1.41 µm^3
Organism Bacteria Bacillus subtilis

Method P.793 bottom paragraph: "Cell volume distributions were measured with the apparatus described earlier (ref 5). Pulses produced by the passage of cells through a Coulter transducer were amplified and analyzed electronically (amplifier and multichannel analyzer from Nuclear-Chicago Corp., Des Plaines, Ill.). Volume scales were calibrated by the use of standard polystyrene and polyvinyltoluene microspheres (Dow Chemical Co., Midlands, Mich.). Counter tube apertures were 12-15 µm in diameter and 30-40 µm in length."
Comments P.796 caption to figure 2: "Cell volume distributions for rapidly growing cultures of bacteria. Volume scales are normalized to the same relative value for the peaks of the distribution. Volumes at the peaks of the distributions and doubling times are shown for each culture in this and the next figure."
