for 3–4 generations: after that the number of chloroplasts slowly decreases and eventually the ciliates succumb. The reason why the ciliate has an absolute demand for phagotrophy remains unclear
since it only constitutes a small fraction of its need for organic C." This organism is also named Myrionecta rubra |
