Method Refraction index-based evaluation of protein concentrations
Comments P.24 left column 2nd paragraph: "Furthermore, it has been shown that the internal density of PMLOs [proteinaceous membrane-less organelles] is only slightly higher than that of the rest of the cytoplasm or nucleoplasm [primary source, ref 32]. In agreement with this increased density, refraction index-based evaluation of protein concentrations in several nuclear bodies found in the Xenopus oocyte nucleus showed that they contain noticeably more proteins (e.g., total protein concentrations were 136, 162, and 215 mg/ml in Cajal bodies, speckles, and nucleoli, respectively) than the surrounding nucleoplasm (106 mg/ml) [primary source]. Since the overall protein concentration inside PMLOs is noticeably higher than the protein content of crowded cytoplasm and nucleoplasm, the interior of these cellular bodies can be described as an overcrowded milieu."
