Abstract: "Study design and methods:
Aliquots of autologous RBCs [red blood cells] from eight healthy adult subjects were labeled separately at four discrete biotin densities, mixed, and infused. The proportion of each population of BioRBCs [biotinylated red blood cells] circulating was determined serially by flow cytometry over 20 weeks. For each population, RCS [RBC survival] was assessed by the following: 1) posttransfusion BioRBC recovery at 24 hours (PTR(24)) 2) time to decrease to 50% of the enrichment at 24 hours (T(50)) and 3) mean potential lifespan (MPL)." |

P.1048 right column 3rd paragraph: "Age ranged from 23 to 62 years. Body mass ranged from 57.2 to 115.2 kg. Throughout the 20-week study period, hematologic blood testing was obtained at the intervals described below neither blood Hb concentration nor reticulocyte count changed importantly (Table 1). Likewise, RBC indices including hematocrit (Hct), mean RCV [RBC volume], and RBC distribution width changed little during the study (data not shown). These data provide evidence that the subjects remained in steady-state erythropoiesis during the study." |
