Abstract: "To determine their shape and volume, cells were separated from the sediment matrix by multi-layer density centrifugation and visualized via epifluorescence microscopy (FM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Total cell-carbon was calculated from amino acid-carbon, which was analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) after cells had been purified by fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS)." |
Comments |
P.7 left column top paragraph: "The cell-specific carbon content was determined for seven samples from Landsort Deep from direct measurements of cellular amino acids (Tables 2, 3). By assuming that amino acid-carbon comprises ~55% of total cell carbon (Ingraham et al., 1983), the calculated mean cell-specific carbon content was 19–31 fg C/cell." P.7 right column bottom paragraph: "The cell-specific carbon content in [investigators'] samples from Landsort Deep ranged from 19 to 31 fgC/cell, with a mean value of 23 fgC/cell." fgC=10^-15grams Carbon |
