P.51 bottom paragraph: "The fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe is a eukaryote in which the size of individual cells may be determined with relative ease: cells are cylindrical, with approximately hemispherical ends, and growth occurs primarily by length extension (Mitchison, 1957), though there is some evidence for an increase in width in successive generations (Johnson & Lu, 1975). The mean diameter of haploid cells is 3.5µm (Mitchison, 1970), and the length increases from about 8 to 14 µm during the cell cycle under normal conditions." |
