P.323 right column bottom paragraph: "The mammalian CNS is composed of grey and white matter. Neuronal somata, glial cells and neuropil are major grey matter constituents. White matter consists primarily of axons and glial cells. Myelin, the fatty white coating that surrounds most CNS axons, was discovered and named more than a century ago (Virchow, 1854). Large amounts of myelin are present in the white matter (50-60% on a dry weight basis, primary source), and this component accounts for the characteristic whiteness of the tissue."
