At the centimeter scale, tissue engineering aims for compact constructs of a thickness comparable to that of the human myocardium (~1.5 cm). The main challenge in meeting this requirement is in the high metabolic demand of cardiomyocytes for oxygen (27.6 nmol/mg [protein.min] ref 111) that cannot be met by diffusional supply of oxygen." |
