"In intestinal metaplasia the gastric mucosa in the pyloric area udergoes a change to resemble that in the small intestine, complete with goblet and Paneth cells, though rarely with villy. In this mucosa, the shape of the glands is that of simple tubules, without branching (unlike normal pyloric glands, which branch extensively in their lower portions). Although, in these intestinalized glands, labelled cells are confined to the lower portion, there is a marked increase in proliferative activity, as evidenced by high in vitro labelling indices (Fujita and Hattori 1977) and increased rates of mucosal DNA loss from the surface (Croft and Cotton 1973: see table 22.3)." |
