"To define the effects of the mutation on other organs, [researchers] next examined stems, flowers and floral organs in the SEM. Although these organs showed an important variability in size and shape, the observations confirmed that cell numbers were reduced throughout development. This reduction was quantified in petals using the same method as for the kinematic analysis (see below). This showed that the number of epidermal cells on the adaxial side of the petals was reduced from 5700 in the wild type (SE 302.55 24 petals) to 1800 in the mutant (SE 175.42 24 petals)." |
