| Comments | The nitrogen cycle of Earth is one of the most critical yet poorly understood biogeochemical cycles. Current estimates of global N2 fixation are ~240 TgN/y with a marine contribution of 100–190 TgN/y. Of this, a single nonheterocystous cyanobacteria genus, Trichodesmium sp. contributes approximately ~100 TgN/y (Capone pers. comm.). See BNID 103507 |
