P.195 right column top paragraph: "The population density was determined by the use of microscopic counting in a cell-counting chamber at intervals as shown in tables and figures. The cells obtained from 200ml of suspension were harvested, washed in 0.25M sucrose, at pH 7.1, frozen for 12 hours, then thawed and sonicated for 1 min. The protein content was determined as described by Lowry et al (primary source). Cytoplasmic and nuclear fractions were prepared according to Penman (ref 15). Cells in suspension culture were synchronised by using the thymidine shock (ref 16)." |

P.199 right column 2nd paragraph: "The experimental results reported in this work indicate that Chang's and HeLa cells, during their growth cycle, are subject to very strong variations of protein content, which appear to be practically "inversely" proportional to the population density." For cell densities ranging from 1.07-1.55×10^6 cells/ml the range of protein per cell corresponded to 314-190 pg/cell. |
