Method Abstract: "To establish a quantitative relationship between VEGF [vascular endothelial growth factor] protein levels and oxygenation, [investigators] exposed exponentially growing clone A or HCT-8 human colon tumour cells in vitro (22 h at 37 degrees C) to oxygen concentrations from 21% (air mixture) to 0.01%."
Comments P.421 bottom paragraph to p.423 top paragraph: "Estimation of VEGF secretion rates in Clone A and HCT-8 cells as a function of oxygen concentration: Estimates of secretion rates are listed in Table 2, and are plotted in Figure 1(b). For clone A, secretion rates increase by a factor of about 7-fold from 21% to 0.0 1% O2. This 7-fold increase is less than that seen for increases in intracellular levels. For HCT-8 cells, levels of VEGF in the medium were too low to measure at 21% O2."
