Fraction of total nerve cell energy requirement that is required to fuel K+,Na+ pump

Range 2/3 Unitless
Organism Eukaryotes
Reference Alberts, Molecular biology of the cell, 4th edition, 2002, chapter 11, link The Plasma Membrane Na+ -K+ Pump Is an ATPase
Comments Almost one-third of the energy requirement of a typical animal cell is consumed in fueling this pump. In electrically active nerve cells, which repeatedly gain small amounts of Na+ and lose small amounts of K+ during the propagation of nerve impulses, this number approaches two-thirds of the cell's energy requirement.
