Intracellular ionic strength of animals

Range 200 to 300 mM
Organism Eukaryotes
Reference Storey, K. B. Functional metabolism : regulation and adaptation. Hoboken, N.J. : John Wiley & Sons, 2004 p.403 right column 2nd paragraph
Comments All animals maintain an intracellular ionic strength (made up mainly of K+ but also Na+, Cl-, Ca2+, and other ions) of 200-300 mM with other metabolites and proteins adding about another 200mM. For value of 150 to 200mM see Scopes Enzyme Activity and Assays 2001 DOI: 10.1038/npg.els.0000712 p.2 left column 4th paragraph. For physiological range of 50 to 250mM see Alberty 2003 Thermodynamics of Biochemical Reactions p.4 top paragraph
