Method P.3 2nd paragraph: "HeLa cells were grown as monolayers on polystyrene microcarrier beads (Nalge Nunc, Rochester, NY, USA) of 160–300µm diameter. Cells were cultured in a 95% O2 and 5% CO2 atmosphere (37°C) for 3 days to reach confluence in Dulbecco’s modified Eagle’s medium (DMEM) supplemented with 10% (v/v) fetal calf serum, 2 mM L-glutamine, 100 units/ml penicillin and 100 μg/ml streptomycin." P.3 4th paragraph: "Light-microscopic images of cells on beads were acquired with a Nikon Diaphot 300 microscope."
Comments Value above from personal communication with author (Jeff Neil). Researchers measured 24 cells and got a radius of 10.5±2.2 µm (mean ±SD). The cells are a half sphere in culture, so the radius can be used to calculate a volume (BNID 103725).
