||P.10164 left column: "Within synaptic terminals, different physiologically defined pools of synaptic vesicles (SVs) can be discriminated on the basis of kinetic differences in their release properties. The pool that has been studied in most detail is the readily releasable pool (RRP), typically defined as the set of vesicles that are immediately available for release. At the calyx of Held, a giant terminal in the auditory brainstem, this pool is estimated to contain 600-6000 vesicles in young rats, depending on the exact definition and the method used to probe this pool (primary source). During high-frequency stimulation, the RRP may be rapidly depleted, leading to a depression of the synaptic responses (von Gersdorff and Borst, 2002)."
