Method P.7854 left column bottom paragraph: "Osmotic Relationships between Cytoplasm, Periplasm, and External Medium: S. typhimurium LT2 cells were exposed to high concentrations of three solutes (Table V): one too large to penetrate the outer membrane (sodium polyglutamate), one able to cross the outer, but not the inner membrane (sucrose), and one able to move freely across both membranes (ethanol). As shown in the table, each of these compounds had a different effect on the cells."
