Method The growth rate of each strain was determined by inoculating overnight culture in 20 mL of Davis minimal salts medium (Davis and Mingioli 1950 Neidhardt et al. 1974) plus 0.2% (w/v) of gluconate (potassium salt, Sigma, St. Louis, MO) with initial Klett unit between 10 and 15. The inoculated culture in the sidearm flask was then shaken at 37°C and Klett unit recorded until it reached 100–150.
