Comments "Two crucial problems can be identified when analysing the literature. Firstly, the scattering of the experimental data that one was able to obtain did not allow one to distinguish between competing models [refs 6,12,27,38]. Secondly, there is a considerable lack of consistency in the kinetic constants reported in the literature for a given microbe-substrate combination. This is exemplified in Table 4 for the case of the Monod saturation constant exhibited by E. coli for glucose which varies over more than three orders of magnitude." Maximal growth rate 0.76 hour^-1
