Method P.337 left column 2nd paragraph: "[Investigators] next determined the average cell length per FtsZ ring (L/R) at each growth rate. [They] calculated the sum of lengths from ∼250 cells sampled from each culture condition and counted the total number of FtsZ rings in each population. Dividing the sum of cell lengths by the total number of FtsZ rings gave [them] the L/R ratio. Remarkably, [they] found that the L/R ratio remained constant regardless of growth rate (Figures 1B and 1C). The L/R ratio was 6.5 μm/ring for cells grown in either rich or poor media despite an approximately 2-fold difference in both cell size and the incidence of FtsZ ring formation (Figure 1A). These results indicate that cells not only alter the frequency of division in response to changes in mass doubling time, but they also coordinate FtsZ ring formation with cell growth to maintain cell size homeostasis."
