Abstract: "A stereologic method was used to obtain these quantities [diameter, volume, and membrane area of the cells and their nuclei] from transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of random sections through human white blood cells (neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, and eosinophils). In order to estimate possible artifacts due to preparation of the cells for transmission electron microscopy, a detailed comparison with light microscopy was made." |
Comments |
P.871 right column 3rd paragraph: "The dimension of the WBCs (White Blood Cells) in the swollen state is determined by the available cell membrane area. The average membrane areas of lymphocytes (~260 µm^2) and neutrophils (~290 µm^2) differ by 30 µm^2, so that the diameters of the corresponding spheres (with unfolded membrane) differ by only 0.5 µm, which is within the limits of the resolution of the LM (Light Microscopy) histograms." |
