P.112 4th paragraph: "Minimum cell cycle time in root-tip meristems of 31 herbaceous species, together with the references from which they were collated, are listed in table 1. While most of the cycles were timed at between 22 and 25 ˚C, the temperature of some timing experiments were not stated. Analysis of the data shows that the 19 annual species have a significantly lower (P < 0.001) mean cell cycle time (12.0 h) than the eight obligate perennial species (21.8 h). However, the mean cell cycle time in four facultative perennial species (12.4 h) is significantly lower (p < 0.001) than the mean for obligate perennial species but not significantly different from the mean for annual species. The observations, therefore, support the hypothesis that species with a short m.g.t (minimum generation time) should have a shorter mean cell cycle time than species with a long m.g.t." |
