It is a relatively asymmetrical particle best described as an oblate ellipsoid of revolution or equivalently as a cylinder with the dimensions 56×224×224Å which corresponds to a hydrated volume of 1.5×10^6Å^3, containing 0.39 g water per gram of
ribonucleoprotein trapped within the particle. At least 90% of this volume is sufficiently tightly packed that it can exclude a 10Å molecule such as sucrose. The 50S subunit has an anhydrous mass of 1.55×10^6 daltons." |
