p.501 right column top paragraph:"Table 4 shows the average literature data for microalgal species grown outdoors in open ponds or closed photobioreactors. Information was found for only 19 of the 55 species reported in Table 3 (BNID 111670). The ratio of productivity outdoors to productivity in the laboratory is compared. Lipid content in outdoor ponds was very similar to that under laboratory conditions. The overall average lipid content for the 20 species in outdoor ponds was 110% of that in the laboratory. Overall biomass productivities in grams per square metre per day and grams per litre per day were 130% and 96%, respectively of that under laboratory conditions. Productivity in outdoor photobioreactors was on average five times higher than in the laboratory. This is contrary to the expectation that productivities achieved in outdoor ponds are generally lower than those in the laboratory. This may be due to the limited available dataset or because conditions (e.g. of light) are not comparable." |
