"Application of the periodic acid-Schiff technique to mouse
testis reveals 16 stages of spermiogenesis. The first 12 of these
stages correspond to one cycle of the seminiferous epithelium,
and have been used to establish the developmental sequences
occurring during germ cell renewal in the mouse (Oakberg, ’56, in this number)....Frequency of stages was obtained by scoring 250 randomly
selected tubule cross-sections from each of the 12 control mice (table 3). On the basis of these results, the 207-hour estimate of cycle length obtained was apportioned among the different
