Comments "In a fast-growing cell, protein synthesis and ribosome production account for most nutrient and energy consumption. However, as fast growth can require the devotion of up to 75% of cellular transcription to the production of ribosomes (primary source), such a programme would be highly deleterious when nutrients are limited (refs 83,115), and thus E. coli devotes resources to ribosome biogenesis only when resources for protein synthesis are abundant."
