"Parasite 1 originated from the superficial marine
sediment layer (~10 m deep) taken at the
mouth of the Tunquen river (coast of central Chile). Parasite 2 originated from mud taken
at the bottom of a shallow freshwater pond near
Melbourne, Australia. After amplification on
Acanthamoeba cultures, both parasites became
observable by optical microscopy as a lawn of
ovoid particles 1µm in length and 0.5µm in
diameter (Fig. 1A)." |

"Observations by transmission
electron microscopy revealed characteristic
ultrastructural features (Fig. 1) common to both
parasites. Despite their identical appearance,
the micro-organisms showed different global
protein contents when profiled by electrophoresis
(Fig. 1C). Anticipating the demonstration
of their viral nature, parasites 1 and 2 will
henceforth be referred to as Pandoravirus salinus
and Pandoravirus dulcis." |
