"The fact that both E. coli and S. typhimurium have seven rrn operons (primary source) indicates that the arrangement is both ancient and selectively maintained. The advantage of seven could simply be one of gene dosage. Alternatively, the operons might encode rRNA molecules with (slightly) different functions, or they might be affected differently by changes in growth conditions." |
