Based on researchers' measurements,
the periplasm occupies approximately 16% of the total cell volume
and the separation between the inner and outer membranes is
(45±10) nm. Electron microscopy images of the bacterial flagellar
motor show that the separation between the outer membrane
spanning L-ring component of the motor and the inner membrane
spanning MS-ring is approximately 40 nm, in agreement with researchers'
measurements [primary source]. |
