Mt DNA/mt (or per mitochondrial fragment) shows almost no variation between values in any single cell type, between different cell types, and between cells from various mammalian species. The low standard error in a given cell type could be accounted for by the existence of numerous individual mitochondria or by fragments derived from a single giant mitochondrion. The essentially identical values in the various cell types from the four species would require that either individual mitochondria from mammalian species have identical levels of mt DNA or that giant single mitochondria from various mammalian species have identical levels of mt DNA. This finding would be difficult to reconcile with the finding that total cell mt DNA varies in various cell types and species. It, therefore, appears likely that based on these five cell types, mammalian mitochondria contain 2.6 mt DNA molecules/mitochondrion."
