The mean fraction of Prochlorococcus, or Prochlorococcus plus Synechococcus, as a percentage of total bacteria as assessed by in situ hybridization was then compared to that estimated by flow cytometry |

The two independent methods gave similar results although the estimates by in situ hybridization were often slightly lower than those obtained by flow cytometry, except for the 100 m sample, where the converse was observed. |
