P.304 caption to Fig. 7.39: "About 90% of all peripheral B cells are relatively long-lived mature B cells that seem to have undergone positive selection in the periphery. These mature naïve B cells recirculate through peripheral lymphoid tissues and have a half-life of 6-8 weeks in mice. Memory B cells, which have been activated previously by antigen and T cells, are thought to have a longer life." Naive B cells are produced in bone marrow and then migrate to the periphery where they enter secondary lymphoid tissues. The majority of the cells are thought to successfully enter lymphoid follicles and are said to undergo positive selection (see BNID 103582, 103583) |
