| Method |
Animals killed, caecum dissected, put in Krebs solution. They were then blotted and weighed, and after washing with ouabain/42K solution counted in a gamma scintillation counter, to determine the uptake of potassium by the tissue. |

Abstract: "4. The amount of potassium pumped into the cells at various concentrations of extracellular potassium has been calculated. In normal Krebs solution the amount pumped in 45 min was 20.0 m-mole/kg fresh wt., and this was increased at higher potassium concentrations." This is an average value arrived at by dividing the value for 45 min (20 mmole/kg fresh tissue). The value increases when potassium levels are increased. |
