"Human RBC [red blood cell] show a very well defined lifespan of 120 ± 4 days. At the end of their life, RBC are removed from the circulation by splenic macrophages. In absence of the classical apoptotic pathway, RBC must possess a specific mechanism which triggers their recognition by macrophages at a defined stage of their life." According to [Mechanics of the human red blood cell deformed by optical tweezers, Dao et al., 2003 doi:10.1016/j.jmps.2003.09.019] p.2260 top paragraph: "The human red blood cell with a biconcave shape and an average diameter of about 8µm has a typical life span of 120 days during which time it circulates through the human body nearly half a million times." For value of ~120 days see London 1949 PMID 18119261 p.463 bottom paragraph |
