P.6665 left column 3rd paragraph: "At optimal growth conditions, E. coli maintains an intracellular pH of 7.4–7.8, provided that the pH of the external environment is between 5.5 and 9.0 (refs 95-98). Using fluorescence imaging, approximate pH values of HeLa cytoplasm, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, and Golgi were determined to be 7.4, 8.0, 7.5, and 6.6, respectively (ref 99). In a recent review, the pH values of various eukaryotic compartments and organelles were reported to be 7.2 for the cytosol, 7.2 for the nucleus (due to permeability), 7.2 for the endoplasmic reticulum, 6.7 for cis-Golgi cisterns and 6.0 at trans-Golgi networks, 8.0 in mitochondria, 7.0 in peroxisomes, 5.5 in secretory granules, 6.3 in early endosomes, 6.5 in recycling endosomes, 5.5 in late endosomes, and 4.7 in lysosomes (Figure 2B)(Primary source)." |
