P.215: "Over the past five years, the importance of a diverse class of 18–24
nucleotide RNA molecules, known as microRNAs (miRNAs) has increasingly been recognized." P.219 left column bottom paragraph: "Following export to the cytoplasm, pre-miRNAs undergo further processing by the RNA endonuclease Dicer, which removes the terminal loop, yielding a double-stranded 18–24 nucleotide RNA duplex (refs 54, 62, 73)." The pre-miRNA stem loop structure is excised from a long mRNA trancript that is capped and polyadenylated (pri-miRNA), by Drosha. Pre-miRNA is then exported to the cytoplasm and hairpin cleaved to give miRNA. The mature miRNAs are loaded in a large protein complex known as the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC).
