Comments "The unifying message of the data presented in Table 1 is that the production and distribution of viruses in aquatic environments is, not surprisingly, determined by factors which affect the productivity and density of host populations, especially the bacterioplankton." Phage/bacteria ratios given in table (column under heading 'VBR') are in the range 80 (Estuarine lake)-0.03 (lake Superior), abundances are in range 0.003×10^6VLP/ml (Sargasso sea)-960×10^6 (cyanobacterial mat, Texas)VLP/ml (VLP=Virus Like Particles).
