In addition to mitochondrial respiration, cells consume oxygen during other processes. Herst and Berridge [primary source] have examined nonmitochondrial oxygen consumption and found it to vary widely in various cell types (Table 4). The enzymes responsible for this observed “cell-surface” oxygen consumption have not been fully identified. Although NADPH-oxidases are one route for this mode of oxygen consumption, this seems not to be the case for HL-60ρ0 cells. These investigators suggest that this trans-plasma membrane electron transport results from the oxidation of NADH. This oxidation not only will facilitate glycolysis, but also contributes to acidification of the medium: these processes are proposed to intercede to ameliorate reductive stress.
