Method Abstract: "A stereologic method was used to obtain these quantities [diameter, volume, and membrane area of the cells and their nuclei] from transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of random sections through human white blood cells (neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, and eosinophils). In order to estimate possible artifacts due to preparation of the cells for transmission electron microscopy, a detailed comparison with light microscopy was made."

P.871 left column bottom paragraph: "The fractional volume contents of the cell nucleus, granules, mitochondria, and the remainder, collectively designated as cytoplasma, are listed in Table 2. This “cytoplasma” contains the Golgi region, the rough endoplasmic reticulum, and the remaining cell matrix, which occupies a large portion of the cell volume. The values listed in Table 2 have been measured on cells in an isotonic medium. In a hypertonic medium these values remain unchanged within the error of measurement, although in swollen cells these values change when volume expansion is opposed by the membranes."
