Comments P.237 left column bottom paragraph: "Neonatal skin: Current dogma holds that the SC is not functionally mature until 32 to 34 wk estimated gestational age and that the skin of premature infants develops competent barrier function within 2 to 4 wk of birth regardless of gestational age. A recent longitudinal study in premature infants suggests that the barrier may be mature at about 30 wk, but that for neonates younger than 25 wk estimated gestational age, postnatal barrier maturation may take as long as 5 to 7 wk (Kali et al, 1998)."
