Method Abstract: "Material and methods: Adipose tissue was obtained from creeping fat of 10 patients with CD. Mesenteric adipose tissue was resected from 13 patients with colon cancer (CC) and from seven patients with diverticulitis (DIV). Three fat tissue specimens per well, and several wells (6-8) per patient were incubated ex vivo for 24 h. The release of VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) into the supernatant was measured by ELISA (The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay)."
Comments P.1421 right column bottom paragraph: "Vascular endothelial growth factor secretion from total adipose tissue explants: There was a stable secretion of VEGF from total adipose tissue explants. The VEGF secretion from adipose tissue cultures did not differ significantly between the patients with CC (colon cancer)(465 ± 98 pg/g fat per 24 h) and CD (Crohn's disease)(399 ± 48 pg/g fat per 24 h P = 0.6 Fig. 2). Patients with DIV (diverticulitis) had the lowest secretion rate of 115 ± 41 pg/g fat per 24 h. The VEGF secretion was significantly lower in DIV patients (115 ± 41 pg/g fat per 24 h) than in CC patients (465 ± 98 pg/g fat per 24 h P = 0.001) or in patients with CD (399 ± 48 pg/g fat per 24 h P < 0.0001). This statistical significance was also obtained using two-way anova, with P = 0.003 (CC vs DIV) and P = 0.021 (CD vs DIV), respectively. There was no statistically significant correlation of VEGF secretion rate with the pattern of infestation in [investigators'] study cohort."
