Pimm et al. (1995) chose the shorter duration, which gives a background rate of 1 E/MSY [extinction per million species per year], and called it a “benchmark.” Barnosky et al. (2011), Harnik et al. (2012), and Alroy (1996) greatly expand on this superficial estimate." |
