Comments P.104 left column top paragraph: "The ability of a cell to replenish and adjust the constituent protein pool is a vital component of the modulation of response, but the continuous turnover of proteins in the cell is also a feature of an unstressed steady-state condition. Even when a cell is not undergoing a period of growth, the protein pool is dynamic, and considerable energy is expended in the continuous synthesis and degradation of most cellular proteins.(refs 1, 2) Different proteins turn over at distinctly different rates, ranging from seconds to months.(primary source) Proteins with a high turnover rate can be regulated by manipulation of the amount of protein in the cell, while low turnover proteins are either nonregulatory or are regulated through post-translational processes such as phosphorylation."
