Neurotransmitter receptors and ion channels are stabilized in the PSD membrane by scaffold proteins. The PSD contains signalling proteins, such as protein kinases and phosphatases (which modulate the synaptic response), as well as proteins associated with the cytoskeleton that extends into the dendritic spines, which are short branches that protrude from dendrites at the site of many glutamatergic synapses.
