"The results of the enumeration of the taste buds are summarized in Table 1. In all, 182 papillae with a total of 262 taste buds were examined. The number of buds in a single papilla varied from 0 to 27 with a mean of 1.4 (s.d. 3.2), and with a markedly skewed distribution. Of the papillae, 115 (63%) had no taste buds at all, 48 (26%) had 1-3, and 19 (10%) had 4 or more taste buds. The mean number of taste buds for the 67 bud-bearing papillae was 3.9 (s.d. 4.3)" "In the present material the number of taste buds was found to vary markedly from papilla to papilla.
