Comments "The results of the enumeration of the taste buds are summarized in Table 1. In all, 182 papillae with a total of 262 taste buds were examined. The number of buds in a single papilla varied from 0 to 27 with a mean of 1.4 (s.d. 3.2), and with a markedly skewed distribution. Of the papillae, 115 (63%) had no taste buds at all, 48 (26%) had 1-3, and 19 (10%) had 4 or more taste buds. The mean number of taste buds for the 67 bud-bearing papillae was 3.9 (s.d. 4.3)" "In the present material the number of taste buds was found to vary markedly from papilla to papilla. Thus, more than half of the papillae had no taste buds at all. Among the bud-bearing papillae almost three quarters had only 1-3 taste buds, but as many as 27 buds were recorded in one papilla."
