Comments | "While historically most studies focused on understanding how promoter binding and transcription initiation are regulated, recent studies have shown that additional stages of the transcription process are also tightly regulated and are critical for gene activation. These studies have demonstrated that binding of Pol II to gene promoters is not sufficient for productive transcription. Instead, in the majority of genes Pol II is partly ‘paused’ 20 to 60 nt from the transcription start site (TSS), and several regulated steps are needed in order for Pol II to depart from the TSS and transcribe the rest of the gene [primary sources]." |
