Comments In "Cell type" row are abbreviations of "Product" row. "[Authors] have mentioned the general appearance of gut endocrine cells, which show considerable similarities throughout the gastrointestinal tract. Classification of these cells is difficult, and has been based mainly on the electron microscopial appearance of the secretory granules combined with cytochemical characteristics such as argentaffinicity and argyrophilia-the Weisbaden classification (Solcia et al. 1970). As cytochemical methods have become more reliable, this classification has become outmoded, and it is now [1984] perhaps best to classify these cells on the basis of the polypeptides produced. The details of this scheme is beyond [authors'] scope, but the various cell types are summarized in table 15.1: the interested reader is referred to the primary source for details."
